Do you need to wear a hairnet? How do you know which one to use?
Hairnets- Do I Need Them
If you handle or process food then the answer is probably yes. The presence of hair in food products causes people to lose the appetite and creates a sickening feeling. This can then lead to major negative press resulting in the decline of demand and sales. The BRC states that protective clothing is required that “fully contains all scalp hair to prevent product contamination…this includes snoods for beards and moustaches where required.” – Section 7.4.2
Hair contamination is caused by natural shedding which is around 40-130 hair shafts per day, figures courtesy of Professor Barry Stevens FTTS, President of the Trichological Society, 2015-16. He also found that modern hair care practices significantly increase the amount of hair that is loose on our heads. The use of hairdryers, straighteners, colourants etc, cause hair shafts to blister leading to severance, creating shorter loose hairs.
Products that passed the certification process and are recommended by HACCP International are Aburnet’s HairTite, KleenCap, HairTite Lite and Tek-Chef brands. Which unlike other commonly used products are comfortable to wear as they include StayCool technology that promotes wicking which takes away moisture from the scalp leading it to evaporate into the atmosphere, keeping the wearer comfortable. Industry need a product that is a one size fits all. But with each individual having different head size, hair styles and hair thickness it is difficult to achieve this correctly. Aburnet’s specially designed structure means it lightly recoils depending on the user, still creating contact points with the hair.
Aburnet’s products have been proven to reduce hair complaints by up to 80% are fully recyclable. They can be remade into a new sustainable product. Have a look at the facts below to see what you could change to protect our environment:
- Mob caps and other non-woven disposables are made from spun laid polypropylene fibres. These materials do not biodegrade and give off harmful emissions when burned
- Using innovative R&D solutions, returned KleenCaps, Hair Nets and Beard Nets will be recycled and turned into new, sustainable plastic products
- If all 500,000 food industry workers re-used KleenCaps after washing with HairGon, the specialist wash additive that dissolves hair, 90% of landfill mass, 555 tons of crude oil and over 2,900 tons of CO2 will be saved per year compared to using mob caps.
- As well as being recyclable once completed their 15 wash cycles, KleenCaps can be recycled on site as wiping cloths in appropriate areas due to their microfibre properties.
